Welcome
Welcome to DiversityMom.com!
Ever since my daughter was born, over nine years ago, I have wanted to write about my experiences as a mother of color in the largely white universe of private nursery programs and independent schools in New York City. While collecting my own never-ending supply of stories of slights and misconceptions, I have listened to similar tales from not just my own area, but across the country.
With our country on the verge of electing its first African-American president, millions of Americans of all colors are feeling pretty good about how far their country has come since the days of institutionalized segregation. I am starting this blog to remind people that the days of a color-blind nation are yet to come. Among today’s elite, an entirely new generation is growing up, their only interaction with people of color being with nannies, doormen and the people who work in the school cafeteria. Growing up in their own insulated worlds, these children of privilege, who are being groomed specifically for leadership in corporate and public life, cannot help but inherit something of their parents’ misconceptions and prejudices.
Although the name reflects who I am, DiversityMom.com is for all parents – yes, dads too – who differ from long-established “norms” in pedigree, religion, profession, income bracket, sexual orientation, family composition, ethnicity, skin color, or any other way imaginable. From time to time, I will add postings of my observations and experiences. I invite you to add yours – good and bad – to illustrate our progress as a society and how far we have to go.
Many thanks,
Robin
